South-South whistleblowing policy conference holds in Uyo

As part of efforts to intensify awareness on the whistleblowing policy, the Federal Ministry of Finance, Budget and National Planning will hold its south-south zonal conference on whistleblowing from May 10-11 in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.

The theme of the event which holds at Ibom Hall in the state capital is: “Implementation of the Whistleblower Policy in Nigeria: Issues, Challenges and Way Forward.”

The governor of Akwa Ibom State, Udom Emmanuel, will deliver the welcome address, which will be followed by goodwill messages from other governors in the zone. The conference will be declared open by Dr Zainab Ahmed, Minister of Finance Budget and National Planning.

Papers will be presented by the Chairman of EFCC, the Inspector-General of Police, CEO of NFIU, the Commissioner of Finance, Akwa Ibom State, and JH Waitono. The lead speaker is Udofia Abia.

All stakeholders, including civil society groups working in the zone, will attend the conference.

AFRICMIL is represented at the conference by Kolawole Ogunbiyi, programme manager.   

The African Centre for Media and Information Literacy (AFRICMIL) has since 2017 been working on a whistleblowing project tagged Corruption Anonymous (CORA) supported by MacArthur Foundation. The project seeks to engage the whistleblowing policy in Nigeria and advocate protection for whistleblowers.

AFRICMIL partners the Presidential Initiative on Continuous Audit (PICA), a unit in the Ministry of Finance, which manages the whistleblowing policy, for a successful implementation of the project.
